Starting something new — especially when it comes to your health — can feel a little daunting.
At Functional Wellbeing, we aim to make your first appointment as comfortable, supportive, and informative as possible. This session is all about getting to know you, understanding your goals, and creating a plan that feels right for you.
Your First Visit: Getting to Know You
Your first visit is a chance for us to get to know each other. When you arrive, there will be a small amount of paperwork to complete. We recommend arriving a few minutes early so we can make the most of your session time together. From there, we’ll begin with a relaxed conversation about you:
Your current concerns
Your medical history
Your previous experience with exercise
What you’ve tried in the past
Your goals moving forward
There’s no rush and no pressure — this is your time.
Whether you’ve never exercised before or already have experience, we meet you where you’re at.
What Our Clients Say About Their First Visit
Starting something new can feel overwhelming — but here’s what others have said about their first visit with us:
"From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and comfortable. The practitioner was very professional, attentive, and took the time to thoroughly assess my condition and understand my goals. Everything was clearly explained, and I didn’t feel rushed at all. It was a very positive first experience, and I’m confident moving forward with my treatment."

Understanding Your Body
After our initial chat, we’ll move into a personalised assessment.
This may include looking at:
Movement and mobility
Strength
Balance and coordination
Basic health measures (depending on your needs)
These assessments are low intensity and completely tailored to you.. They simply help us understand where you're at and how we can best support
You don’t need to overthink what to wear — just come in something comfortable that allows you to move freely. Enclosed shoes are ideal, but we’ll always work around what feels best for you.
Do You Exercise in the First Session?
Not in the way most people expect. Your first session is focused on understanding your body and building a clear plan. Some light movement or testing may be involved, but it’s all about assessment — not pushing you through a full workout. There’s no expectation to “perform” — we simply want to understand how your body moves and what will work best for you.
Appointments typically run for 45 minutes to 1 hour. This allows enough time for us to properly understand your needs without feeling rushed.
Creating a Plan That Works for You
Once we have a clear picture, we’ll work together to create a plan moving forward.
This may include:
Personalised exercise recommendations
Education around your condition or goals
Guidance on how to move safely and confidently
A plan for ongoing sessions if needed
Everything is tailored specifically to you — your body, your lifestyle, and what matters most to you.
Support That’s Tailored to You
“I have received the most personalised help taking into account body, mind, goals, lifestyle etc. Such fantastic support each step of the way helping me heal and grow stronger.”
How an Exercise Physiologist Can Help

Exercise physiology is about more than just exercise — it’s about improving your overall quality of life. We can support you with:
Persistent pain
Injury rehabilitation
Chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
Strength and mobility
Falls prevention
Pre and post surgery recovery
Mental health and general wellbeing
Through a combination of movement, education and support, we help you build confidence in your body again.
You’re Not Just Another Appointment
At Functional Wellbeing, we’re passionate about helping you achieve the best quality of life possible. We believe in the power of movement — not just for physical health, but for how you feel day to day. As one journal puts it: “Exercise has such profound pharmacological and physiological effects that it should be considered a drug therapy.”
Our goal is to guide you in using that “therapy” in a way that is safe, effective and tailored to you.
